The exhibition “Masterpieces from the Madeira Museums”, illustrates the main cycles of its History, between the 15th and the early 20th Century.
The Exhibition brings together a group of noteworthy pieces from the museum’s collections of sculptures, paintings, goldsmithery, ceramics, photography and so on. They illustrate the contacts with some of the important European artistic centres and are evidence of the strategic importance of
the Island within the context of the Portuguese maritime expansion and the later European exchanges, in the economical cycles of Sugar Trade, Wine Trade and Tourism, as fundamental elements of Madeira’s development.
This Archipelago was the foundational experience of the Portuguese presence in the Atlantic, a starting point for its further worldwide expansion.
